The Easter Bunny Visits the Daycare

The Easter Bunny made a special early visit to our apartment one night last week while we slept. Noah followed all the paper eggs with "N" on them. They led all the way down the hall, through the kitchen , and directly to the chair where he normally eats his breakfast.
On the table by his chair he found a treat bag! The Easter Bunny had put one chocolate egg in each of the bigger plastic eggs. He also gave Noah three marshmallow ice cream cones!
Of course, it was only natural for Noah to enjoy one before his breakfast! (Sometimes nutrition has to be sacrificed for fun and spontaneity!)
Actually, the Easter Bunny left treats for all the daycare kids. They just had to follow the first initial of their names to find their treat bags. Maya's "M"'s went across the living room floor, and up the window. Her treat bag was hanging up by the curtains. That crazy Easter Bunny! Aidas's "A"'s went across the living room floor and up the easel. His treat bag was atop the Easel (an appropriate place, since Aidas spends much of his time there). Theo's "T"'s led him to his treat bag which was perched on the bin of cars (his favourite toys by far). The location of Lucas's treat bag was completely whack. His paper eggs went right under the door to the computer room, and we found his treat bag on the computer table!
The kids were allowed two little chocolate eggs and a marshmallow ice cream cone as part of their snack. Theo, who hasn't been eating much during his days at the daycare, seemed to thoroughly enjoy the marshmallow cone.
In fact, they all enjoyed these. (The mind boggles, as they look pretty gross to me. But how could I understand? I am merely an adult.)
After lunch the percussion ensemble played along to the "Goofy Music" CD. Lucas seems to be inspired by Noah's obsession with music as of late, and is a lot more interested in the musical instruments. He was passionately striking those spoons on the pots; it looked like it was very cathartic to him! Actually, I have noticed many dents on the bottom of those pots from the kids' drumming. Since (strangely) the noise doesn't bother me (or them), I enjoy letting them bang away. They look so pleased with themselves, like they are rebelling  in some small way. Yes that's it. It's a look of power. Good for them. They have so little of it at this point in their lives!
After their naps, we played "Grocery Store". This time, we had many packages and containers to use, since I've been saving them over the past little while. We even used some of the empty plastic eggs from the Easter Bunny for the egg cartons. No fighting over the hummus containers this time. No sir. They could also buy yogurt, crackers, oatmeal, cream cheese, lemon juice vitamins and graham crackers.
Like the last time, they all started coming to the cash at once. I said, "I'm sorry but you need to get in line". Eerily, they immediately formed a line! I had no idea they knew how to do this without more detailed instructions. They amaze me.
The photos above were taken earlier in the week. Twins really do have a special bond. These two sat, reading together for a long time. Maya would turn the pages and say, "What's that, Lucas?" They were obviously questions she already knew the answer to. Lucas would reply, "A ball", or "A train", etc., and they continued like this for some time. They really enjoy spending time together; even more so lately.
And I just had to post this. Just because. Aidas's mom informed me that morning that he refused to take off his Spider Man pajama top. He is a diva at 2 and a half. A darned cute one though!

  2. Place the ears on white Bristol Board and trace around them with a pencil.
  3. Cut the ears out of the Bristol Board.
  4. Cut out a strip 2 inches wide, all the way across the width of the Bristol Board.

Easter Craft: Paper Egg Potato Print

Here's a fun and easy craft for your little ones to do. It's probably best for kids aged 3 and up.

Materials:
  • white Bristol Board
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • 2-3 potatoes
  • different coloured paints
  • trays or paper plates to hold the paint (not cups, since they are too deep and difficult to dip the potatoes in)

Method:
  1. On your white Bristol Board, draw different sized egg shapes with a pencil. Cut them out.
  2. Cut one of the potatoes in half, and quarter the rest.
  3. Squeeze paint colours onto separate paper plates. Place one potato wedge in each of the colours.
  4. Show the child how to 'stamp' their paper with the potato wedge, to make prints.

5. Let the paper eggs dry and display proudly!

Painting Easter Eggs, Pretend Play, and Other Tidbits

After enjoying the "Grocery Store" pretend play, I figured we'd try a different scenario: the pet store. Noah has an excessive amount of stuffed animals he has received as gifts and hand-me-downs. Using only the stuffed animals one would find at a pet store, we made groups of like animals and placed them together in 'cages'. I was the cashier again, and the kids chose the pets they wished to buy. It was a short-lived activity, in comparison to the grocery store scenario. Nonetheless, it is great to see their increased interest in pretend play. I know there will be a day in the not too distant future when I won't be able to get them to stop playing store!
Reading can be contagious! I snapped these photos first thing in the morning, as the kids decided to start off their school day with 'not so silent reading'.
We continue to practise gluing using foam letters and shapes. Also pictured below is one of our special activities: playing with Noah's rocket ship.
The kids had a blast playing in the tents last week. I think it was the longest they have ever played in them. They usually get a little wild at some point during this activity, and someone ends up getting hurt. That didn't happen this time. I guess they are settling down somewhat at the ripe old age of 2 and a half!

I think these are some beautiful shots of the twins. They are growing so fast! They are recently, with much encouragement, starting to actually sleep instead of viewing nap time as showtime! (I could previously only get them to sleep if I lay down in the bed near them.) You see, they nap in separate playpens, but in the same room. Before I leave the room, they lie down, looking exhausted. But once that door closes, the show begins, and they start belting out the tunes. One time I even heard Lucas start to cry, and complain that Maya was not following his "set list". "Lucas wants to sing Itsy Bitsy Spider!" he anxiously and impatiently cried.

As I was trying to capture what looked like Noah's Canadian Toddler Idol audition, I got an unexpected cute exchange between the oldest buddies of the group: Noah and Aidas. Aidas always makes everyone laugh. What a delightful soul he is!!

(Oh, and excuse my grammatical slip. It's "Where ARE the other two?" Tsk. Tsk.)

One of the daycare kids is currently away on a trip. We miss him and hope he is doing well. Meanwhile, we've gotten the chance to meet Theo. He LOVES cars and trains, and the rest of the group really enjoys his company. He often gives the other kids hugs. He did need quite a few reminders to stay with the group on his initial trips outdoors with us! Although he is adapting at lightning speed, his stay is only temporary.

The kids like to play in a particular area outside. They pretend it is a house. In the pictures below, the kids are setting the 'dining room table'. They generously gave me more than my fill of pine needles - er - I mean French fries, for dinner!

I had to get a shot of Aidas with his sticks. As soon as we get outside, he begins scanning the ground for sticks. He usually ends up carrying quite a few around for the duration of our outdoor play. (In fact, I often find that he is still clutching something by the time we get back to the apartment.) It's just so cute. It's how he rolls.

Here are the serious readers again! It is interesting that they have started their own routine: they fairly consistently read books immediately after lunch. I guess they are giving their food time to digest.

Today we dyed and painted Easter eggs. The kids were pretty excited. They would have gladly coloured eggs all day long, if I let them!

I used hard-boiled eggs, since they're slightly harder to break! I also used a kit, and supplemented with some of our paint and paintbrushes.

And here are the beautiful eggs they coloured. They are very proud and know exactly which ones they did. What a lovely day!
